Hospitality Management Course Sequence and Degree Requirements

The program in Hospitality Management is an integral part of the offerings of the Paul College. It is one of only ten programs worldwide that is accredited by both the AACSB American Assembly of Colleges and Schools of Business and the ACPHA Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration. Graduates are prepared to assume management positions in all sectors of the service sector, with primary emphasis on the hospitality industry.

Graduates have accepted positions in lodging and food service (and their allied businesses and wholesalers), retirement facilities, software companies, tourism, travel and recreation industries, and institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, colleges, and schools.

In order to have a well-rounded university education, students take courses in liberal arts as well as foundation courses in business administration and economics. The hospitality management curriculum builds upon this foundation and provides experience and in-depth education in the lodging and food service-related industries, as well as the broader industries that comprise the hospitality discipline. Each course includes an international component.

With our on-campus learning laboratory, University Hospitality Services (UHS is the campus organization that oversees campus dining and campus catering), the program includes a mix of practical experiences along with classroom activities. These practical experiences are provided by major consulting projects to industry as part of classroom activities, lecture series, seminars, and field trips.

The Department of Hospitality Management encompasses twelve required courses and three hospitality electives (or two 4 credit hour electives and a 4 credit hour internship, independent study course). In addition there are five business administration and two economic courses

  1. Hospitality Management (HMGT) students must complete all courses with a minimum grade of C- in each course, (for ADMN 403 students must obtain credit). Courses taken at other institutions are NOT averaged into the major GPA or cumulative GPA. Courses taken at UNH-Manchester are averaged into the cumulative GPA but NOT into the major GPA.
  2. Any PAUL major required course in which a grade below C- is obtained must be repeated.  No more than two PAUL courses may be repeated and each course may be repeated one time.  You must make up the credits for a repeated course before you graduate.  
  3. You must obtain at least a 2.30 grade point average in you major courses to graduate.
  4. All HMGT majors must complete an 800 hour paid practicum after enrolling in the major.

To be eligible for graduation, students enrolled in the Department of Hospitality Management are required to fulfill a minimum of 800-hours of on-the-job, paid work experience in the hospitality industry; 100 hours must be earned through University Hospitality Services after matriculating in the major. This work experience may be completed over several summers or during the academic year. Transfer students practicum hours will be prorated and must be completed after matriculating into the Hospitality Management Department. Please see Practicum requirements for further information.

ALL PAUL COLLEGE MAJORS:

  1. You must complete Calculus (Math 424A or Math 425) or Finite (Math 420), during your freshman year.
  2. You need 128 credits to graduate with a B.S. degree in Hospitality Management.  If you have repeated a course you must complete a Repeated Course Form, and review your credits each semester to insure that you have enough credits to graduate. 
  3. A repeated course must have the same Whittemore School course number (as the original course) as listed in the UNH-D catalog to qualify as a repeated course.  (Ex: ECON 412, Microeconomics, at UNH-Manchester, would not qualify as a repeated course for ECON 402, Microeconomics, at UNH-D).
  4. Four Writing Intensive courses must be completed. (One must be a 600 level and one must be in the HMGT major) 
  5. No writing intensive courses, general education courses, major courses, minor courses or PAUL courses can be taken pass/fail by a PAUL student.
  6. It is your responsibility to drop any courses for which you have registered and for which you have not met the prerequisites. You may be dropped at any time from courses when prerequisites have not been met. 
  7. Given the possibility that changes sometimes occur in course schedules (such as time or location) it is essential that you reconfirm your class schedule (via webcat) directly prior to the first day of classes.

A Hospitality Management minor is offered as a professional educational opportunity and designation for students enrolled in the liberal arts as well as other non-professionally-oriented degree programs as an entree to the world's largest industry, hospitality and tourism.
